All the John Cage You Can Eat
Back in December I wrote about "something extraordinary," a recording of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony electronically manipulated to last twenty-four hours.
Kid's stuff! This BBC story tells of John Cage's composition As Slow As Possible, the performance of which will take 639 years. The first three notes are now being played on a German church organ. These three notes will last . . . a year and a half.
The performers are taking matters seriously indeed: "The performance has already been going for 17 months -- although all that has been heard so far is the sound of the organ's bellows being inflated." By my reckoning, the piece is scheduled for completion in 2640.
